In this 7 part Supportive Leadership Series, we will go through the leadership skills you require to be an effective business leader, manager and a highly effective communicator.
Listening is attending to a person and paying attention to the key elements in the person’s communicating.
To give total attention and presence to another while listening so the other person feels deeply understood and heard, what can we listen for?
1. Clarity checking: Check for clarity by asking about the definition meaning of words. “How are you using the word ‘delegate?'”. Without checking, questions and responses will tend to be vague and not precise.
2. Representational system understanding to detect, recognize, and record the systems that a person uses to make sense of things.
3. Precisely repeating their words, not paraphrasing in your own words
4. Sensory awareness to notice, mirror back and detect the physiology of a person’s state. We will talk about the crucial aspects of states in a future article.
5. Predicate awareness to detect the kind of language patterns a person is using
